Disrespect for indigenous Irish culture began with the Ulster plantation. And it continued as an instrument of oppression when the Northern state was founded. So what’s new?

There is perhaps understandable astonishment this side of the border that a row over the Irish language should have had such consequences in the North. A few have claimed that it has been caused by Sinn FĂ©in using the language as a political weapon. But for those with even a minimal knowledge of the attitude of unionist governments to all Irish cultural matters since the foundation of the Northern state, such sentiments are fairly jaw-dropping.
