Don’t feel too sorry for the buy-to-let brigade

Residential investors knew exactly what they were getting into. Writing off their debts should be bottom of the list of priorities

I remember having a conversation with the late Jim Mitchell in the run-up to the 2002 general election. He was Fine Gael’s finance spokesman at the time, and one of the proposals he had come up with was a plan to compensate shareholders in Eircom who had suffered massive losses on their investment in the privatisation of the state phone company in 1999.
