Many of our Oscar nominees began in theatre with Arts Council funding
In 1986, the Arts Council received an application for funding from an unemployed would-be novelist. He sent in excerpts from his unpublished first novel, seeking support for the second. They gave him two grand.
Their endorsement gave him a shot of confidence; the money helped him finish the novel. Last week, the film of that writer’s sixth novel, Brooklyn, was nominated for three Oscars, including best picture.
