To an outsider, the most striking thing about this election must be that the government’s central claim is true, and yet it gets no credit for it.
There is a recovery. It is unstable and unequal, but it is real.
It is visible even in the housing crisis – soaring demand has priced vulnerable people out of the market. Their homelessness is a symptom of economic success, as well as of policy failure.
