Work permit numbers drop sharply over housing concerns

The ongoing accommodation shortage is deterring tech companies and other multinationals from hiring staff who are not already based in Ireland

It’s a record time for employment in Ireland, with over 2.6 million people working here, figures from the Central Statistics Office show

The number of employee permits issued for the tech sector dropped dramatically in the first eight months of this year due to cutback and concern from employers about the Irish housing market, an expert has said.

A total of 3,203 permits were issued under ‘Information & Communication Activities’ in the January to August period, down from 7,609 in the corresponding period in 2022, according to figures published by the Department of Enterprise.
