Von der Leyen silent on Leo Varadkar’s call for review of EU-Israeli trade deal

Commission President has not yet responded to calls from Ireland and Spain for an urgent review of the agreement in light of Israel’s actions in Gaza

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has received no formal response from Ursula von der Leyen to a letter last month calling for the bloc to urgently review its trade agreement with Israel following an escalation of violence in Gaza.

It comes as Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, is preparing next week to hold a debate at the Foreign Affairs Council following the concerns raised by Varadkar and Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish prime minister.
