Up to budget watchdog to hold coalition ‘accountable’ as EU fiscal rules won’t, experts warn

The government will have to be kept in check with strong domestic rules as its set to get a free pass from new EU requirements over the coming years, experts have warned.

Lucio Pench, the recently retired director of macroeconomic policies with the European Commission, told the Business Post it would be up to the Irish budget watchdog to “hold your government accountable” given the inability of the European Union’s rules to do so.
