Irish regions rank highly on the EU wealth index partly because the country’s GDP is heavily skewed upwards by multinational firms

The south of Ireland is the wealthiest region in the European Union, according to new figures released by Eurostat.

The EU rankings put “Southern Ireland” in first place, stating that its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 286 per cent of the bloc’s average in 2022. Counties Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford, Cork and Kerry make up the region.
