Cónal Thomas takes a look back at a year that began with ‘poster-gate’ and continued with an array of crises and confrontations

It was a year in politics bookended by Paschal Donohoe.

The coalition entered 2023 with the Fine Gael TD and avid reader under fire over a failure to declare a €1,000 donation to hang posters in his Dublin Central constituency for the 2016 general election.

It concluded with the public expenditure minister reportedly holding preliminary talks to take over as head of the all-powerful International Monetary Fund.
