Gerry Adams took time out of his election-packed schedule to drop into the High Court in Dublin last week to observe a legal row about preserving a 1916 battle site on Moore Street.

But there was no sign of the Sinn Féin leader on election day as Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy, the man he described in 2006 as “a good republican”, received an 18-month jail sentence for tax fraud.
