Small reactors are not the solution to energy problem, warns nuclear expert

Member of government’s advisory committee says Ireland should focus on renewables due to huge potential for offshore wind here

SMRs (small nuclear reactors) are currently in the development stage internationally

Small nuclear reactors are too expensive, have safety issues, and may not be ready in time for the fight against climate change, a leading expert has warned.

Dr Paul Dorfman of the Radiological Protection Advisory Committee (RPAC), which advises the Irish government on nuclear issues, warned that there was a lot of hype about small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) but that the reality was far less appealing.

Dorfman was responding to comments by Vincent Guérend, the French Ambassador, in the Business Post who said many countries the same size as Ireland were considering the use of small modular reactors.
