Sinead Gibney is to stand down as head of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) to run as a Social Democrats candidate for the European Parliament in the summer.

Gibney has served as chief commissioner of IHREC since 2020 and is leaving the commission to run in the Dublin constituency for the Social Democrats in June.

Gibney was previously a Social Democrats candidate in the 2020 general election, but withdrew from the election when the opportunity to take on the top job at IHREC arose. While the Social Democrats have not yet held their selection convention for the Dublin constituency in the European Parliament elections, the Business Post understands her selection will be a formality.
