Self-employed project workers ‘becoming the norm’ for firms

Study finds majority of businesses now have a minimum 10 per cent of their workforces employed on a freelance basis – many earning more than €100,000

The so-called project economy, which is made up of self-employed contractors and freelancers, is becoming the norm rather than the exception in businesses, according to new research from Trinity Business School and financial services provider Contracting Plus.

The contribution of the project economy has emerged as a “significant influence” on the country’s economic expansion, with organisations increasingly implementing a hybrid workforce model of both permanent employees and independent contractors, the research found.
