David Murphy has been appointed RTÉ’s economist and public affairs correspondent to replace Robert Shortt, the broadcaster’s new company secretary.

Murphy, who currently serves as the broadcaster’s political coverage editor, will now be responsible for “reporting and providing analysis of economic issues and trends” as well as “wider public affairs issues including major political policy initiatives and their impact on the economy and society”.

He previously worked in Newstalk and the Irish Independent covering business affairs, before joining RTÉ as business editor in 2009 where he led the outlet’s coverage of the economic boom, subsequent financial collapse and EU-IMF bailout.
