Revenue to introduce strict conditions for vacant home tax exemptions

Homeowners will be required to keep records of household bills on vacant homes for six years in order to avoid the new tax

Revenue will have the power to ask householders for the electricity or gas meter number of their vacant property

Homeowners will have to show the Revenue Commissioners their electricity, gas and waste bills to avoid paying the vacant home tax on properties they own.

Opposition parties had complained that many homeowners with vacant properties would be able to avoid the new tax, which will come into force next year, due to the number of exemptions available.
