The relationship between trade union Siptu and the owners of Tara Mines, Boliden, has deteriorated further following comments accompanying the Swedish firm’s recent financial results.

Boliden posted its financial results for the fourth quarter of the year on February 8, which showed revenues declined to SEK 20,754 million (€1.849 million) for the three months, with operating profit down to SEK 985 million compared to SEK 1,512 million in the same period in 2022.

In a results briefing chief executive of Boliden, Mikael Staffas, said while there is no “formal” timeline for the zinc mine outside Navan in Co Meath, if it cannot return to profitability it will have to close.
