Politicians frustrated after ‘incredibly unhelpful’ private meeting with X

A meeting of the Oireachtas media committee was held this to discuss online safety and content moderation at Elon Musk’s platform

Ahead of the meeting, TDs and senators were told that Elon Musk-owned company was hiring more in-house content moderation staff as part of a restructuring of its trust and safety team.

Politicians have expressed their frustration after what was described as an “incredibly unhelpful” meeting with X, Elon Musk’s social media platform, on Wednesday.

A meeting of the Oireachtas media committee was held this afternoon in private at the request of X, to discuss disinformation, online safety, and content moderation.

Representing the platform were Claire Dile, government affairs director for Europe, and Barry Murphy, legal director and global head of safety, content and law enforcement.

The appearance comes in the wake of a Business Post investigation which revealed in detail how Elon Musk, X’s owner and a free-speech absolutist, had watered down the company’s trust and safety policies since he took it over in October 2022.
