Peter McVerry: The government is ‘running an economy, not a society’

The housing campaigner said Ireland’s economy is strong but record numbers of people are homeless and many cannot afford to buy a house

Peter McVerry, the housing campaigner, has accused the government of “running an economy, not a society”.

McVerry said the state has become focused on defining the country’s success in terms of economic metrics while figures for people in homelessness hit record levels.

“The government are running an economy, not a society. When you look at what's happening today from the government's perspective, isn't the economy of fantastic,” McVerry said.
