O’Reilly’s Castlethorn fails in bid to avoid tax bill over land hoarding

An Bord Pleanála has publish its first rulings on appeals lodged by landowners against controversial tax on idle land, which is due to take effect in February 2024

Joe O’Reilly’s development firm faces two large bills under the state’s new land hoarding tax measure after losing its bid for exemptions.

In April, more than 600 landowners lodged appeals with An Bord Pleanála in a bid to avoid significant land-hoarding taxes due to come into force in February 2024. The tax will be levied at 3 per cent on a site’s market value.
