National Lottery rang almost 1,000 customers to warn them about their spending

Despite the relatively high number of people contacted, just a fraction of players were excluded from playing

Nearly 9,000 people got a personalised alert from the National Lottery in 2021 encouraging “reflection on their spending” levels, figures show.

The Regulator of the National Lottery said that 8,944 people – 0.8 per cent of all online players in 2021 – were contacted by the lottery over the frequency with which they were playing the lotto or the amount they were spending.
