Irish motorists are facing a raft of new taxes and charges over the coming years as the government moves to fill a €5 billion hole in the public finances due to falling revenues from fossil fuel-based taxes.

The planned shake-up will comprise a move to a ‘user and polluter pays’ approach to taxation, which will include all road users, including drivers of electric vehicles.
