Leo Varadkar hails ‘positive day’ as Stormont returns but Sunak warns ‘real work’ only starting

Varadkar and Sunak held bilateral talks as the new Northern Ireland executive, led by Michelle O’Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly, began its work

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has hailed the restoration of powersharing in Northern Ireland as a “very positive day” as he met with Northern Irish political leaders and Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister.

At the meetings, Sunak told Stormont’s leaders that the “real work starts now”.

Varadkar and Sunak, whose governments are co-guarantors of the landmark Good Friday peace agreement, also met each other for a bilateral meeting at Parliament Buildings.
