Cabinet has approved plans to reform Ireland’s accommodation strategy for international protection applicants which will see a move away from “total reliance” on private providers.

Roderic O’Gorman, the minister of integration, got approval for long-awaited proposals to address the immediate crisis in sourcing accommodation for asylum seekers.

The changes would see 14,000 beds delivered through state-owned reception and accommodation centres by 2028.
