Britain’s chancellor of the exchequer has asked the City of London watchdog to investigate the extent of so-called debanking, claiming the practice poses a “threat” to free speech.

Jeremy Hunt’s comments came as British banks are facing widespread reforms over account closures, after the Nigel Farage row which last week led to the resignation of the top bosses at NatWest and Coutts.
