European Elections 2024

Broadcasting regulator says political candidates should ‘not be on air’

Niall Boylan, the Classic Hits FM presenter, has registered as a candidate in the upcoming European elections

Niall Boylan, the talkshow host, is running as a Independent Ireland candidate in Dublin for the European elections

It is “not appropriate” for individuals running for election to present radio programmes, according to the broadcasting regulator.

Coimisiún na Meán was responding to queries from the Business Post after Niall Boylan, the radio broadcaster, registered as a candidate in the European elections this June.

Boylan registered on Monday to run in Dublin as a candidate with Independent Ireland, but continued to present his radio show on Classic Hits FM on Monday evening.

Asked what its policy was on election candidates presenting radio shows, a spokesman for Coimisiún na Meán said it was “not appropriate for persons involved with ‘election interests’ to present programmes during the election campaign period.” The spokesman added that “election interests includes candidates for an election”.
