Insurer Vhi sees surplus decline 47% as claims and operating costs increase

Health insurer increased premiums by an average of 4.8 per cent this year due to the increased cost of providing healthcare to customers

Health insurer Vhi reported a net surplus of €34.3 million from consolidated business activities in 2022, down from a surplus of €65.3 million the prior year.

The decline was due to the increase in claims volumes and costs, the reduction in market values of Vhi’s investment portfolio, and increased operating costs as the company invests in healthcare and technology, according to results from the group.
