Government's €450m subsidy for apartment developers still waiting for European Commission approval

The scheme, which proposes to pay developers €450 million to build apartment projects for purchase by individuals and families, not funds, was launched in 2021, but has been unable to proceed

Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Housing, and Bob Jordan, chief executive of the Housing Agency, promote the Croí Cónaithe Cities scheme, which aims to deliver 5,000 apartments for sale to individuals by 2026

The European Commission’s competition authority has still not given the government the all-clear to proceed with a scheme to pay developers €450 million to build dormant apartment projects, more than a year after the plan was announced.

There is no timeline for when a decision can be expected from the commission’s directorate-general for competition on the Croí Cónaithe Cities scheme, which the government has said will deliver 5,000 apartments for sale to individuals by 2026.
