Government will consider capping prices on energy bills in policy U-turn

Department of Environment exploring possibility of price guarantee for a portion of energy used in households, even though capping energy bills had been ruled out before budget over fears of exchequer exposure to further price rises

The government had ruled out energy price caps ahead of Budget 2023 in September due to the potential large cost to the exchequer

The government will reconsider placing a price cap on energy bills in the new year, the Business Post has learned, despite having previously warned that doing so would represent a risk to the economy.

The move could cost billions of euro, but has become a more attractive prospect after Germany pushed ahead with its own year-long price cap, which will give a guaranteed price to households and businesses for a portion of their energy use.
