The government recorded a €5 billion surplus in the first seven months of the year, new figures show, with record tax receipts from corporate, income and value added tax (Vat) strengthening its hand months out from a potentially crucial budget.

The latest exchequer returns in the months until July mark a notable turnaround from the same period last year when the government reported a €5.7 billion deficit.
