Government looking to delay EU rubber pellet ban used in astroturf pitches
Pitches which use the material made from old tyres would be made redundant within six years under a new ban, but the government wants the period extended so a substitute material can be found
The government is lobbying to delay an EU rubber pellet ban which could make all astroturf sports pitches redundant within six years.
The pellets, which are manufactured from shredded tyres, help to keep the artificial fibres in astroturf pitches upright and increases their longevity. The impending EU ban poses a huge challenge for schools and sports clubs because there is no substitute material readily available once the transition period expires.
