Exclusive: EU will fund Ireland to pay farmers directly for nature restoration and ‘ecosystem services’

The European Commission has said it is willing to find additional funding to pay farmers for nature restoration and “ecosystem services”, in a leaked letter to member states seen by the Business Post.

The Commission has also proposed an increase in the targeted “share of drained peatlands that can be rewetted on land that is not under agricultural use”, meaning less agricultural land would be subject to the contentious rewetting proposal.
