EU leaders should consider ploughing more money into the European Investment Bank (EIB) to help fund climate infrastructure and defence spending, a top EU official has said.

European Council president Charles Michel, who chairs EU leaders’ summits, tabled the idea as part of his “new deal on European competitiveness” which he will put to the bloc’s 27 prime ministers and presidents at a gathering next week.
