Electric Ireland says most of surging profits will be returned to the state

The firm is owned by the ESB, which recorded earnings of €390 million in the first half of the year as energy prices surged

Electric Ireland has said ESB profits this year cannot be used to bring down energy bills for customers.

Electric Ireland executive director Pat Fenlon also said most of the money will be returned to the state or be used for investment.
