Ireland’s electoral watchdog has defended its decision not to recommend the creation of more seats in the next Dáil, after advising an increase of just 14 TDs in the next election.

An Coimisiún Toghcháin, the Electoral Commission, this morning said it had been unable to “future-proof” against future population rises as part of a major boundary review that has reshaped voting constituencies across the country.
