Philip Lane, chief economist at the European Central Bank (ECB), has offered a cautiously optimistic take on inflation, saying slowing in goods and services gauges are welcome and that underlying pressures will keep weakening.

Irishman Lane - who previously served as Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland from 2015 to 2019 - described 2023 as the year of “peak second round” as the effects of prior increases feed through the economy.
