Drug users to be given health warnings if caught by gardaí under new plans

Drug users will be given health warnings instead of being prosecuted under new government plans.

The Gardaí and the HSE are going to set up a new IT system so that people caught in possession of small amounts of drugs can be referred to a health practitioner.

The HSE is then going to recruit specially trained staff to give health warnings and advice to users about how to deal with their drug use.
