Doubling the volume of ethanol in petrol will be needed to meet Irish climate targets, according to a senior official at the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE).

Ethanol is a renewable biofuel that is compatible with petrol cars. It can reduce full lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 70 per cent when compared with oil. The current ethanol blend in Irish petrol is 5 per cent (E5).
