Department of Finance at odds with experts over cost of concrete levy on new homes

Government figures diverge significantly from estimates drawn up by expert groups on how much the controversial 5% tax will add to the cost of building houses

The Department of Finance is at odds with an expert group over how much the new concrete levy – which has been significantly pared back after widespread criticism – will add to the cost of building new homes.

Officials from the department will tell the Oireachtas committee on finance that the 5 per cent levy will increase the construction costs of a typical three-bed semi-detached house by between €400 and €800.
