He previously worked as group political correspondent and chief reporter at Independent News and Media, now Mediahuis Ireland, between 2006 and 2015, as well as at the Irish Times and the Sunday Times.

His 2016 book Hell At the Gates, published by Mercier Press, covered the downfall of the Brian Cowen government and was a national best seller.

A regular commentator on Irish television and radio, he has also served as a stand-in presenter on Today FM’s Last Word with Matt Cooper.

McConnell (43) is a graduate of University College Dublin and Dublin City University. He lives in Glasnevin with his young family.

The Business Post Group is a diversified media group with a strong technology, data, experiential and digital-driven portfolio of businesses. The flagship brand, the Business Post, sits at the centre of the group and has a more than thirty year track record as Ireland’s leading business, politics, economics and current affairs national news title.

McConnell will be responsible for creating a multimedia content strategy with a dual focus of accelerating the brand’s digital growth and protecting the core print product, including the use of data insights to shape the editorial direction of the content in order to build audiences and develop communities at a time of enormous change, while upholding the values of trusted, fact-checked and independent journalism.

“We are delighted to have Daniel on board to lead the editorial strategy of the Business Post into the next stage of its development as we drive forward the digital transformation of the brand,” Sarah Murphy, CEO of the Business Post, said.

“We have put in place an ambitious strategy to engage with and serve our readers, subscribers, listeners and viewers, while building a financially sustainable media business that can promote independent journalism into the future. I look forward to working closely with Daniel in achieving these strategic and ambitious goals set for the title.”

Speaking about his appointment, McConnell said: "I am delighted to be joining the prestigious Business Post as editor and to work alongside its exceptional team of journalists. The Business Post has an excellent track record of breaking stories and holding people in positions of authority to account. I believe in the critical importance of quality journalism and I am really looking forward to delivering that to our readers on a daily basis.”
