Cleaning hazardous landfills to cost further €170m
Hundreds of sites yet to be remediated 15 years after the EU censured Ireland over illegal dumping
The state will have to pay another €170 million and spend another decade cleaning up hundreds of landfills, more than 15 years after the EU found the country guilty of flouting its waste disposal rules.
Some €191 million has now been spent on the state’s landfill remediation scheme since it was implemented in 2006, according to a government briefing note seen by this newspaper.
