Charities watchdog appoints inspectors to investigate Peter McVerry Trust as crisis deepens

Darragh O’Brien, the Minister for Housing, has said the board of charity has “questions to answer” following financial concerns

Helen Martin, chief executive of the Charities Regulator, said that the watchdog had determined a statutory investigation “is warranted”.

The state’s charity watchdog has appointed inspectors to conduct an investigation into the Peter McVerry Trust, the embattled housing and homeless charity that is facing financial difficulties.

The regulator said the move follows "concerns arising from correspondence sent by the charity to the Charities Regulator in July 2023 and engagement with the charity since then in relation to governance and finance-related matters".
