The government has set in train the process of nominating a new president for the Court of Appeal ahead of the upcoming departure of Mr Justice George Birmingham who retires in August.

Birmingham has served as president since 2018, and previously sat on the High Court between 2007 and 2018. Having qualified as a barrister in the 1970s, Birmingham was a Fine Gael TD for Dublin North-Central between 1981 and 1989.
