Big Tech firms warn government over staffing concerns at new online safety regulator

Meta, Apple, Google and more are concerned about the new media commission’s resourcing given it will be implementing safety codes for the sector

Big Tech firms including Apple, Google and Meta have privately warned the government that Ireland risks reputational damage unless it speeds up hiring at the newly established media commission – an agency that will police the operation of social media companies.

A group of technology companies – which included representatives from TikTok, Yahoo and Ericsson – met with senior government officials in late May for a round-table discussion coordinated by the Department of the Taoiseach.
