One of the country’s largest gas users, Aughinish Alumina, is examining the use of hydrogen and industrial heat pumps to decarbonise its operations, the Business Post has learned.

The Russian owned alumina producing site in Limerick is engaging with the Irish state to develop solutions for its gas generated high-heat processes at the refinery, with electric heat pumps and hydrogen part of the options being considered.

Eamon Ryan, the environment minister, Willie Walsh, the chief executive of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), and Michael O’Toole, the community affairs manager with Aughinish Alumina, all confirmed that the alumina producer is examining innovative these new technologies to try address emissions in one of the most difficult to decarbonise areas of high-heat refining.
