The €65 billion dilemma: What to do with Ireland’s bumper corporation tax take

The government hopes the public will be open to the state saving a large part of next year’s record-breaking corporation tax bonanza – but various parties are already pitching for ways to spend the money

Simon Coveney, the Minister for Enterprise, privately described the record corporation tax surplus of €16 billion next year as a “fantastic headache” to have.

But he went on to tell the Fine Gael TDs and Senators at their parliamentary party meeting last week that it would also be a “political challenge” because the country had seen in the past what could happen as result of excessive government spending.
