‘The cost of doing business’ – Developers challenge planning objectors over ‘go-away money’

Three developers in Ireland have proceedings before the High Court alleging individuals are abusing the planning system for financial gain

Stephen Garvey, chief executive, Glenveagh, says objectors abusing the planning process ‘continue to be a nuisance to our business, costing millions of euro . . . We have been left with no option but to issue proceedings to protect our business interests’

In an ongoing High Court case against two Meath residents accused of abusing the planning process, the chief executive of one of the country’s biggest home builders was blunt.

“They continue to be a nuisance to our business, costing millions of euros,” Stephen Garvey, head of Glenveagh Homes, said in an affidavit.

“We have been left with no option but to issue proceedings to protect our business interests,” he added.
