As the dust settled on the still smouldering riots in Dublin city last Friday, Sinn Féin decided to seize the political initiative.

“The gardaí have my full support but given the catastrophic operational failures last night, I have no confidence in the justice minister, and no confidence in the Garda Commissioner,” Mary Lou McDonald, Sinn Féin’s president, told reporters. “They should resign, both of them.”
