Neither the former president’s wife, children or in-laws have turned up to support him at his trial in Manhattan

It was a tale of two very different courthouses in America’s political and financial capitals, as separate legal dramas played out last week.

The US supreme court, a temple of marble, mahogany and velvet, is a building of singular magnificence. The dingy, claustrophobic interior of the sprawling Manhattan criminal courts building, by contrast, exudes an enervating mix of tension and bureaucratic indifference.
