IRFU commercial chief Padraig Power on sports sponsorship: ‘If we stand still, we’re dead’

Rugby’s governing body in Ireland has a host of strong commercial partners, but the IRFU is always looking to evolve what it can offer brands

As Ronan Kelleher crashed over the line in Marseille to score Ireland’s fifth try against France, Padraig Power knew he was witnessing something special.

The IRFU’s chief commercial officer has seen many Irish rugby teams come and go in his 24 years with the organisation but last weekend’s 38-17 demolition of France was something new.

“Marseille was an absolute marvellous start for the men’s team. The Six Nations is very much a tournament of momentum. You have to start well. Funnily enough, I don't think I can remember a year when there was three away wins on the first weekend. Every away team won last weekend, which is very interesting and normally isn't the case,” Power said.
