The European budget commissioner has warned that member states must think outside the box and come up with new ways of funding the EU

The European Commission wants to significantly expand the EU’s multi-year budget

Johannes Hahn, the European budget commissioner, has warned the way the EU funds itself is not “sustainable”, and urged member states to “think out of the box” on new revenue raising measures.

In a push to enlarge the European Commission’s remit, Hahn said the de-facto ceiling on spending needs to be increased under the post-2027 EU budget.

“You cannot deal with Europe’s challenges and close the investment gap in Europe with a shrinking European budget,” the Austrian said this week at a Brussels conference.
